About Start Seeing CVI

F09147F4-6E3B-4532-9A42-5C327ABBBDA9Cortical visual impairment (CVI) is the most common visual impairment in children in the US, but most people haven’t heard of it. My son was diagnosed with CVI as a newborn in 2011. My work since then is to learn as much as possible about CVI.

Start Seeing CVI and its accompanying t-shirt was created in response to the lack of knowledge and understanding about CVI in my son’s early intervention and school years. Start Seeing CVI and its Facebook page were created in response to the overwhelming need for advocacy and awareness of CVI.

At the end of 2020 in the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, I completed my M.Ed in vision studies at University of Massachusetts Boston, the only vision studies program in the US with a dedicated, required course on cortical/cerebral visual impairment. In addition I am completing the first of its kind CVI Certification, also at UMB.

As a certified TVI in WA and CT, I consider myself a CVI educator. You may reach out to me about consultation amd evaluation services. I can be reached at StartSeeingCVI@gmail.com.
